Baltimore GM Plant: First High Volume Electric Car Manufacturer In US

Baltimore GM Plant To Be The First High Volume Electric Car Manufacturer In US

    What may become…

    General Motors announced Tuesday:

General Motors will invest approximately $246 million in electric motor and electric drive manufacturing including construction of a high volume electric drive production facility at the Baltimore Transmission plant that will begin to manufacture in 2013 electric motors for GM’s Two-mode Hybrid system.  The plant will be the first electric motor manufacturing facility in the U.S. operated by a major automaker.

GM has selected the Baltimore plant in White Marsh to be GM’s exclusive manufacturer of the two-mode hybrid drivetrain. The GM Baltimore Transmission Plant, where GM made the announcement, is an environmentally friendly facility, that was certified in 2007 as landfill-free, and in 2008 included several solar arrays that provide a significant portion of the plant’s electricity.

    Again, from GM:

By bringing this capability to the U.S., GM will create approximately 200 jobs.  Local and state incentives, along with the Recovery Act funding announced in August 2009 by the U.S. Department of Energy, are helping to make this facility expansion and job creation possible.

Hundreds Turn Out For 22 Green Job Positions In Baltimore

Timothy B. Wheeler, a Baltimore Sun reporter, detailed the lineup of applicants for Parks and People 22 positions for green jobs in Baltimore in a recent article.  From the article:

The jobs, provided through the Parks and People Foundation, a local nonprofit, will focus on reducing urban trash and pollution fouling Baltimore’s harbor and the Chesapeake Bay.

“This is a day of real opportunities for the people of Baltimore, and a day of opportunity for the Chesapeake Bay,” said Jacqueline Carrera, president and CEO of the foundation. The jobs pay $8 to $13 an hour to start, with benefits, she said, and most of the workers will be assigned to four teams working on planting trees, maintaining park trails, picking up trash and retrofitting storm drains to reduce the amount of pollution getting into them and ultimately into local waters.
